Northern Ontario rallies for tax fairness

Communities across Ontario and across Canada are joining in the fight for tax fairness and to promote quality public services.

Ottawa (16 Feb. 2011) Community and labour activists are gathering on Thursday, February 17, 2011 for a rally outside the Sudbury Regional Hospital to demand corporate tax cuts at the federal and provincial levels be canceled.

Felicia Fahey, a member of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE) and an All Together Now! Champion for Change, has been working on this tax fairness campaign for months and is organizing these rallies. "This is an important rally and one that is being embraced by our community; we need to take a stand against our governments and their reckless ways," she said. "People are finally speaking out and letting the government know that we, the people, are the voice of this province and this country and we are not going to let corporations take the money that we so desperately need for public services."

Fahey continues, "The days of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer have to stop and people need to speak out like in Sudbury at this rally. The cuts to health care are just not acceptable, and we will not let any more happen."

The Ontario Public Service Employees’ Union (OPSEU/NUPGE) and the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) have launched campaigns targeting the federal and provincial government’s decisions to give away this year alone over $8.4 billion in tax cuts to profitable corporations.

The Unions argue that at a time when the country is still recovering from the worst economic collapse in recent history, all levels of government need to be focused on ensuring people have decent-paying, stable jobs to make a living and build for the future rather than giving away precious revenue that could help improve health care, education and much-needed public services.

The public response to the campaigns has been overwhelming. Communities across Ontario and Canada are joining in the fight for tax fairness and to promote quality public services.

On Friday, February 25, 2011 the campaign rolls into downtown Sault Ste. Marie for a lunchtime rally. Activists will send Liberal MPP David Orazietti the same message, demanding that the provincial government invest in public services and reverse the corporate tax cuts.
