Ask your Member of Parliament to Support Bill C-304

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear ___________________:

I am writing to you, as my Member of Parliament, to ask for your support for Bill C-304 - An Act to ensure secure, adequate, accessible and affordable housing for Canadians. This is a private member’s bill designed to establish a framework for a national housing strategy.

Canada is the only G8 country without a national housing program. Despite welcomed dollars committed by this government, federal budgets show that tens of millions of dollars are left unspent while 1.5 million Canadian households remain in core housing need.

The Conference Board of Canada reports the lack of adequate, affordable housing is actually costing Canadians and indirectly drives up the cost of health care and social programs.

Bill C-304 falls in line with recommendations from the Honourable Art Eggleton’s Senate report on poverty – bringing together all stakeholders to develop and implement a plan, with timelines and measurable results, to meet Canada’s existing commitments to adequate, affordable housing.

What does Bill C-304 really do? The Bill:

• Provides for planning and accountability at all levels of government;
• Brings all levels of government and key stakeholders to the table to develop and implement a plan to address housing and homelessness across Canada;
• Recognizes existing federal/provincial housing agreements; and
• Provides a framework for action to address in a concrete way, housing affordability, adequacy, safety and homelessness.

Over 60 major organizations support Bill C-304 including the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the municipalities of Calgary, Toronto, Victoria, Sudbury and Vancouver.

I hope I can count on your support for adequate, affordable housing. Please vote yes to Bill C-304 when it comes back to Parliament for its third and final reading.

Sincerely,

(Your name)
