“I am honoured to represent NSGEU members who provide quality public services across the province for the next two years,” Jessome said. “I will continue to stand up to protect and defend the important public services our communities rely on.”
Halifax (30 May 2011) - Joan Jessome will be leading the Nova Scotia Government & General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) for her seventh term as President.
“I am honoured to represent NSGEU members who provide quality public services across the province for the next two years,” Jessome said. “I will continue to stand up to protect and defend the important public services our communities rely on.”
Over four days of debate and discussion at the NSGEU convention, delegates passed resolutions to protect and extend public services for Nova Scotians. These resolutions included lobbying for more services for those living in low income housing, increased funding for mental health services, and working to broaden the definition of “violence” in workplace violence regulations to include harassment, bullying and intimidation.
Members at Convention committed over $100,000 in charitable donations over the next two years to organizations including Feed Nova Scotia, the Mental Health Coalition of Nova Scotia, and the sponsorship of an international student at the Coady Institute at St. Francis Xavier University.
They also vowed to fight to protect public health care in the upcoming negotiations for a new Federal-Provincial Health Accord in 2014.
