PEIUPSE/NUPGE is on the move organizing and improving labour rights.
Charlottetown (6 July 2011) - The Prince Edward Island Union of Public and Private Employees (PEIUPSE/NUPGE) continues to grow as it organizes new members across the province.
On April 4, approximately 70 licensed practical nurses (LPNs), resident care workers (RCWs), kitchen, housekeeping and activities workers, employed by Gillis Lodge, joined the largest union on Prince Edward Island, PEIUPSE/NUPGE.
The union is currently conducting education sessions on bargaining with members from Gillis Lodge and will be distributing demand forms to members in the near future in order to begin preliminary work on the first collective agreement.
In May, 80 members, employed by Whisperwood Villa, ratified their first collective agreement by 93 per cent, just over a year after joining the union. One of the biggest issues in bargaining was wage parity. Members work as LPNs, RCWs, as well as kitchen, housekeeping and activities staff.
