OPSEU bids farewell to Jack Armstrong

picture of Jack ArmstrongToronto (14 July 2011) -Jack Armstrong, who passed away earlier this week, was a past President of Local 712 and an OPSEU Executive Board Member for Region 7 from 1982 to 1992. Jack began his public service career at age 17.

Jack retired after many years as a conservation officer with the Ministry of Natural Resources, having served the membership extremely well. Among his many accomplishments was spearheading a classification grievance on behalf of conservation officers that led to a major salary increase.

Brother Armstrong was a strong, dedicated trade union leader who valued his family and loved to enjoy the outdoors. He and his wife Cookie operated a tourist resort in their hometown of Sioux Narrows.

Smokey Thomas, OPSEU’s President remembers Jack, “He was a tireless promoter of the interests of members across the north; a team player; a rightfully proud OPSEU member.”

NUPGE President James Clancy was OPSEU President during much of Jacks tenure on the Executive Board. He recalls Jack’s commitment to the union, “Jack was a tough no nonsense man with a heart of gold. As a trade unionist, he knew which side he was on. He was a member’s leader.”

The funeral for Brother Armstrong will be held Saturday, July 16 at 2 pm, at the Sioux Narrows Chapel, Highway 71, Sioux Narrows, Ontario.
