MGEU members at Knowles Centre vote to strike

MGEU members vote in favour of strike action but want to return to the bargaining table.

Winnipeg (30 Sept. 2011) - Members of the Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU/NUPGE) employed by the Knowles Centre voted on Sept. 22 to reject the last contract offer from their employer. In a separate ballot, members were asked if they would be willing to strike. Members voted in favour of strike action.

The MGEU/NUPGE has informed the employer of the outcome from the vote. A strike date has not been set. The next step for the bargaining committee is to request that both sides return to the bargaining table.

The first priority for the members at the Knowles Centre is their commitment to the youth they help on a daily basis. If strike action is the only option available, the committee and the union will discuss how that can be carried out without putting youth at the centre at risk.

The Knowles Centre is a non-profit treatment centre for children and adolescents with emotional and behavioral difficulties. Their Group Care Treatment Program serves 32 youth (aged 12 to 17). The MGEU/NUPGE represents roughly 80 members in the centre.
