SGEU makes donation to seniors organization

"This is an opportunity to thank our seniors who have done so much to build our city and our community,” said Trevor Morin, Local 1101 President.

Regina (31 Oct. 2011) - Members of the Saskatchewan Government and General Employees (SGEU/NUPGE) turned over the keys to a brand new car to Four Leaf Clover Seniors Independence Club in Regina. Four Leaf Clover will use the donated Chevrolet Cruze to transport seniors to appointments or to get groceries.

The Four Leaf Clover Seniors Independence Club motto is to contribute to the quality of life for those seniors determined to maintain their independence.

“The donation of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze will help us reach our motto,” said Jennifer Tallentire, Coordinator of the Four Leaf Clover Seniors Independence Club. As we age, one very difficult loss of independence occurs when it is time to give up the car keys, when we lose a person that was the driver in our lives, or when our health or diminishing strength makes it difficult to take public transit.”

“Four Leaf Clover offers safe and affordable transportation to seniors with the assistance of volunteer drivers who assist seniors on icy streets and stay with them at appointments. Our aim is to help people maintain their independence and a connection to the community,” said Tallentire.

The keys to the new car were presented by Trevor Morin, SGEU Local 1101 President.

"SGEU 1101 members work and live in Regina, and this is an opportunity to thank our seniors who have done so much to build our city and our community,” said Morin. “We’re happy to be able to donate this car which will allow seniors to maintain their independence and continue to live in our community.”

The bargaining unit represents approximately 6,000 members who work in Regina and area. SGEU/NUPGE also donated cars for seniors’ transportation in Prince Albert and Yorkton.
