NSGEU/NUPGE health care workers employed by the Capital District Health Authority could be on strike April 25.
Halifax (10 April 2012) - Days after entering into conciliation talks with the Capital District Health Authority, the Nova Scotia Government & General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) says that dsicussion have broken down over the employer's refusal to alter its concessionary bargaining position.
A major stumbling block during negotiations was the employer's offer of one per cent increases in each of three years of the agreement, in addition to other concessions. Despite an overwhelming strike mandate from the membersip, the CDHA refused to improve its wage offer and all but one concession remained on the table.
The conciliator is expected to file his report that negotiations have reached an impasse on Tues. April 10, which would put the 3,500 health care workers at Capital Health in a strike position at 12:01 am on April 25.
The union’s bargaining committee and Capital Health were in conciliation April 3, 4 and 5.
Last month, the affected members voted 91 per cent in favour of strike. The 3,500-member local accepted two years of one per cent increases in the wake of the global economic crisis, but are now calling for a wage offer that won’t leave them falling farther behind the rising cost of living.
An emergency services agreement has been reached between the union and the employer.
