On Human Rights Day, join Amnesty International's Write for Rights Campaign: No more Indigenous women lost to violence

Send a message to Prime Minister Harper expressing your concern about the lack of action to protect Indigenous women from harm and to prosecute the perpetrators of violence.

Ottawa (4 Dec. 2012) – On December 10, Human Rights Day, Amnesty International is encouraging people worldwide to write letters as part of their Write for Rights campaign. This year two of their focuses are on Indigenous Peoples in Colombia and the murdered and missing Aboriginal women and girls in Canada.

Amnesty International is asking people to send a message to Prime Minister Harper expressing their concerns about the lack of action to protect Indigenous women from harm and to prosecute the perpetrators of violence.

The message should also stress that the federal government needs to collaborate with Indigenous women’s organizations to develop and adopt a comprehensive, coordinated National Action Plan which must address both the social and economic inequalities that lead to increased risk of violence against Indigenous women and how the police and justice system respond to the attacks.

The National Union is also encouraging Canadians to sign the Native Women's Association of Canada's petition asking the federal government to hold a national inquiry into missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls in Canada.
