NUPGE set to deliver second in a series of five Pension Basics webinars

Webinar on pension plan funding and the role of the actuary to take place Friday, April 8.

Ottawa (04 April 2016) — The 360,000-member National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) will deliver its second in a series of five one-hour Pension Basics webinars on Friday, April 8, 2016.

Participants gain essential infomration on how pension plan funding works

The April 8 webinar, entitled Plan funding and the role of the actuary, will explore how the administrators of a defined benefit pension plan predict how much money will be needed to fund retirement promises made by the plan. It will also examine the role of the actuary in making those predictions, and what it means when a plan is underfunded or overfunded.

The webinar will be moderated by Jean-Guy Bourgeois, Director of Internal Operations with the Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union (MGEU/NUPGE). The two presenters for the webinar will be

  • Laurie Hutchinson, a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA) and a Trustee on the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) pension plan; and
  • Cheri Hearty, a Benefits Counsellor with the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE) and a Trustee on the Canadian Blood Services Pension Plan.

The time of the webinar will depend on which time zone in which a participant lives. To find the time of the webinar in your province, click here,
