Paramedic company should ‘Fly Right’ in negotiations

Alberta Labour Relations Board is set to hear a Bargaining in Bad Faith Complaint lodged against the owner of the Peace River air ambulance operator.

Edmonton (27 April 2010) - Negotiations between the Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA/NUPGE) and Advanced Paramedic Ltd. (APL) continue to be grounded, as a result of "ongoing stall tactics" by company owner, Stephen Woodburn, says HSAA.

"We've only had six days of bargaining since November 2009, and very little has been accomplished with this employer," said Scott Pattison, HSAA Communication Officer.

"This individual is playing games, not only with his employees, but with the lives of northern Alberta residents, who rely on APL for emergency air ambulance services to Edmonton. The clock is ticking."

The Alberta Labour Relations Board is set next week, to hear a Bargaining in Bad Faith Complaint lodged by HSAA against the owner of the Peace River air ambulance operator. Talks between the two sides broke off earlier this week, because of "a lack of meaningful negotiations."

"We have asked this employer to submit tangible, written proposals, most importantly for rest during shifts, which as of Friday, he has yet to do," Pattison said adding, "It's one thing to say you want to return to the bargaining table, but quite another to be sincere about negotiating."

The two sides have only agreed in principle to some typical non-monetary language found in most collective agreements. However, the employer refuses to address the primary issue for his paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians – rest during shifts.

HSAA is proposing all APL Emergency Medical Services crews are guaranteed a minimum of eight hours of rest for every 16 hours of work, to ensure the health and safety of both paramedics and the public are maintained.
