Record profits don't stop LCBO from demanding rollbacks
Toronto - The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) has just
reported its first billion-dollar "dividend" for taxpayers.
Despite this, the managers of the world's most lucrative
publicly-owned liquor retailing agency are demanding unprecedented
cutbacks from employees.
The Ontario Liquor Boards Employees Union (OLBEU/ NUPGE) notes
that the strong financial performance was recorded "in large part
due to the dedication and very hard work" of LCBO workers and was
achieved in the face of "many cuts to casual staffing" by the LCBO. |

LCBO employees
are getting no thanks from chairman Andy Brandt for the agency's
$1-billion profit. |
Yet when negotiations for a new contract opened last month, the agency
presented the union with a long list of rollback demands. "The
employer has submitted 73 proposals (and all) 73 of them are
seeking concessions," the OLBEU reports.
The concessions the LCBO is demanding include the following:
•
Scheduling shifts at any time between 7:00 a.m. and 11:30 p.m.
•
Reducing casual wage rates to $10.50 per hour.
•
Designating Saturday and Sunday as a regular work days for head
office computer operators.
•
Abolishing double time for working on the second consecutive day
off.
•
Capping health and benefits payments.
•
Charging employees with family coverage $10 a pay for
supplementary health and hospital or dental coverage.
•
Abolishing seniority as the basis for promotion.
•
Merging 'A' and 'B' store assistant managers.
•
Extending the usage of 'fixed term' employees.
•
Extend the normal work week for logistics staff to include
Saturdays and ending "wash up" time.
•
Changing the job description of warehouse workers to alter
hourly rates.
•
Deleting the contract appendix that deals with seasonal
employees.
•
Introducing a management position in logistics facilities making
the positions of foreman and forewoman redundant. |
"These are just a few of the items that management is trying to take
away from us," the union says. "Members must be prepared to take a
strong stand if they are to protect their future." NUPGE
