Negotiations will continue as long as 'real progress' is being made. - Peter Olfert
Winnipeg (3 Nov. 2006) - The civil service bargaining committee of the Manitoba Government and General Employees Union (MGEU/NUPGE) has returned to the table for the first time in several weeks.
The ongoing dispute between the provincial government and the union had been scheduled to go to arbitration in June 2007. It still could end up in arbitration but the resumption in talks is being taken as a positive sign.
“I am pleased that we’re back meeting with government,” says MGEU president Peter Olfert. “It is always preferred if the two sides come to a mutual agreement rather than having a third party come in and impose a settlement.”
Olfert said the sides will continue to meet so long as real progress is being made or until an agreement is reached. The previous contract for Manitoba public employees expired in March, 2006. NUPGE
