An important contract settlement improving wages and working conditions for members whose jobs were privatized by the Campbell government.
Victoria (6 October 2006) - Employees of Telus Sourcing Solutions (TSS) in Victoria who provide payroll services for the provincial government have ratified a new 33-month contract that includes significant pay increases along with other improvements.
The 80 members of the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) at TSS yesterday voted 83 per cent to approve the deal, which provides for an average wage increase of 6 per cent retroactive to April 1, 2006. Additional 2.5 per cent increases in wage rates will be implemented in December this year, and December 2007. The new contract expires Dec. 31, 2008.
“This is another important contract settlement that our union has achieved to improve wages and working conditions for our members whose jobs were privatized by the Campbell government,” says BCGEU president George Heyman.
“We were also able to safeguard existing protections and benefits like the pension plan.”
Heyman says government payroll services were privatized in November 2004 to the Telus subsidiary.
“At that time,” says Heyman, “the workers’ old collective agreement transferred with them. So this new deal is our first negotiated settlement with the company.”
