HSAA drive to unionize DKML lab workers in Alberta

'We feel the time is right to begin an organizing campaign.' - Elisabeth Ballermann

Edmonton (7 February 2006) - The Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA/NUPGE) is kicking off a massive campaign to unionize DKML laboratory workers in central Alberta. The campaign officially gets under way Monday with an advertising blitz that includes radio and television ads, billboards, LRT and bus posters. The campaign also features a website where lab employees can get up-to-date information and download a petition to join HSAA.

"HSAA represents 70% of laboratory technologists in Alberta, including more than 1,100 lab employees who work for Calgary Laboratory Services. During the last few months, we've been getting calls from DKML employees expressing an interest in joining Health Sciences. We feel the time is right to begin an organizing campaign," says HSAA President Elisabeth Ballermann.

HSAA has produced a seven minute DVD featuring interviews with lab workers explaining the advantages of belonging to Health Sciences. This DVD will be handed out by organizers throughout the campaign.

HSAA is a union that represents more than 13,000 professional, technical, support and ambulance workers in Alberta's health care system. NUPGE
