Employees fighting to save jobs and win a fair contract with island bottler
St. John's (9 June 2006) - Striking Browning Harvey workers, who manufacture Pepsi products for Newfoundland and Labrador, say the company is now importing supplies in a bid to force employees to accept its demands.
Approximately 60 employees have been on strike since May 29, fighting issues such as technological change, wages, benefits and job security. Most work at the company's St. John's bottling plant.
They are members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE/NUPGE). The union is urging the public to boycott Pepsi products across the province until the strike is resolved.
Jim Cavanaugh, president of the local representing the workers, says bringing out-of-province supplies into Newfoundland and Labrador amounts to contracting out and violates the terms of the employees' last agreement with the company. "It's not a good move and it's certainly demoralizing."
Talks between the two sides have broken off. NUPGE
