Ontario government pulls Pepsi ads from provincial website

Water logo more in line with government policy

Toronto (10 August 2006) - The Ontario government has quietly removed Pepsi ads from a ministry of natural resources website for kids.

Days after the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE) drew attention to the fact that the province was pushing soft drinks to an audience of young children, the Pepsi logo disappeared from Parks Ontario's campsite.24 website.

It has been replaced with a Pepsi Aquafina water logo that links to a page offering ideas for healthier lifestyles.

OPSEU pointed out that the original website displayed the Pepsi logo in 344 separate places.

"If (Premier) McGuinty really wants to promote healthy food choices and an active lifestyle for children, as he claims, he's got a strange way of going about it," said OPSEU president Leah Casselman.

A government spokesperson said the water logo is more in keeping with what the province is trying to promote. NUPGE
