NUPGE throws its full support behind SGEU in Saskatchewan

'The National Union will provide whatever assistance you may request of us.' - James Clancy

Ottawa (15 Dec. 2006) - The 340,000-member National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) is throwing its "full support and solidarity" behind 13,000 members of the Saskatchewan Government and General Employees Union (SGEU) in their fight to negotiate a fair contract with the province.

"We recognize that this round of bargaining is really a struggle for respect and recognition of the value of the services your members provide to the citizens of Saskatchewan," president James Clancy says in a letter to SGEU president Bob Bymoen on behalf of the NUPGE's national executive board.

"Like their counterparts in NUPGE Components across the country, SGEU members have paid a high price to help their government through lean times," Clancy writes.

"Now, at a time when the government is in a much stronger economic position, your members are asking for a little fairness in return. It appears that their request has fallen upon deaf ears! Instead, the Saskatchewan government has chosen to ignore SGEU’s strong case for fair wage increases and taken an unreasonable and inflexible approach to the current negotiations."

Clancy said the National Union and its Components stand solidly behind SGEU members as they prepare to take job action to support their stand at the bargaining table.

"The National Union will provide whatever assistance you may request of us to help SGEU reach a successful conclusion to these negotiations," Clancy advised Bymoen. "Please pass on our support and solidarity to your leadership and members and let me know if there are any specific ways the National Union can assist SGEU in its current dispute with your provincial government."
