Boycott lifted as amicable settlement is reached after seven-week strike
St. John's (18 July 2006) - A seven-week strike at Browning Harvey, the makers of Pepsi products for Newfoundland and Labrador, is now over.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE/NUPGE) says a tentative agreement covering 60 employees was reached and ratified over the weekend. The strike, which began May 29, ended when employees returned to work on Monday.
NAPE president Carol Furlong was pleased the union and the employer came to an amicable resolution. Browning Harvey is the only producer of soft drink products in the province.
Furlong also thanked the public for supporting workers during the strike. "I am sure consumers of Pepsi products will be very pleased to once again enjoy their favourite beverage," she added.
A boycott of Pepsi products, called by NAPE during the walkout, has now been lifted, allowing a normal distribution of beverages to stores to resume across the province.
NAPE is the province's largest union with more than 21,000 members. It represents workers in the government, health care, education, corrections, food processing, hospitality, retail, security, and financial sectors. NUPGE
