Fredericton (21 Feb. 2006) - Members of the resource services division of the New Brunswick Union of Public and Private Employees (NBUPPE/NUPGE) have voted 77% in favor of striking if necessary to win a fair contract with the province's Conservative government.
Ballots cast in the mail-in vote were counted Feb. 15 under supervision of the province's labour and employment board.
The group includes 245 members who work as forest rangers, agricultural technicians and park officers. Their last collective agreement expired in January 2004. Negotiations over the past two years has failed to resolve major outstanding issues.
"The decision by the resource services membership in favour of a strike sends a very strong message to the government their last offer is unacceptable,” says union spokesperson Tom Mann.
“Two years is a long time to go without an agreement and our members have shown patience. The government now needs to put its best offer on the table." NUPGE
