MGEU members turn out for Manitoba pre-budget process

'We encourage MGEU members to make their voices heard.' - Peter Olfert

Winnipeg (22 Nov. 2006) - Members of the Manitoba Government and General Employees Union (MGEU/NUPGE) have once again made their voices heard during pre-budget consultations by the province's New Democratic Party government.

"Each year, Manitoba Finance Minister Greg Selinger hosts a series of meetings designed to give Manitobans an opportunity for input into the next provincial budget. They are known as the pre-budget consultations," the union notes on its website.

"The consultations provide Manitobans from all walks of life with a great opportunity to present first-hand experiences to Minister Selinger about the challenges they see in their communities and provide advice about how the government should be spending your tax dollars."

MGEU members who took part discussed work-related issues and the need to re-invest in public services.

"While MGEU helped facilitate the inclusion of our members at the meetings, they participated not as MGEU members, but as members of the voting public and individuals whose jobs depend on government funding," the union says.

"We encouraged MGEU members to make their voices heard," says union president Peter Olfert. A summary of issues raised at the various meetings is available at the link below on the MGEU web site. NUPGE
