Negotiators work out deal without conciliation or arbitration
Charlottetown (23 Nov. 2006) - More than 1,000 health care workers represented by the Prince Edward Island Union of Public Sector Employees (PEIUPSE/NUPGE) have reached a three-year tentative settlement with the provincial government.
“We are pleased that we were able to reach a tentative agreement at the table without going through a process of conciliation-arbitration,” says union president Shelley Ward.
Ratification kits will be sent out members shortly. Details will not be made public until members have had an opportunity to review the proposal.
Information sessions will be arranged by the union after holiday season and a formal ratification vote will take place by the end of January. If approved, the new agreement will run until March 31, 2009. Wage increases will be retroactive to April 1, 2006.
Brenda Walker, a member of the negotiating team, said the proposed settlement was reached after many hours of intense bargaining and acceptance will be recommended by the union. NUPGE
