BCGEU supports call for inquest into Hampton Court death

Closure of the facility may have been a factor, says BCGEU

Vancouver (27 Oct. 2006) - The B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) supports the call for a coroner’s inquest into the death of a resident at Hampton Court, a facility for the mentally ill that is being closed by the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority.

The BCGEU represents 10 full-time and eight residential care aides at Hampton Court.

“We are very concerned over the unfortunate death of a resident from Hampton Court, given the reports from staff that the closure of the facility may have been a factor in the client’s decision to take his life,” says George Heyman, BCGEU president.

“We support MLA Gregor Robertson’s call for a coroner’s inquest. Plans to close Hampton Court should be put on hold. Residents, families and staff have made it clear that the facility is operating well and there is no reason to close it. The owner is willing to make any changes to the house where the residents live that might be required,” adds Heyman.

Hampton Court is a 16-bed mental health facility located in the Shaughnessy area of Vancouver. It has been in operation for over 30 years. NUPGE
