HSAA settles Wainwright Ambulance dispute but not Flagstaff

Alberta Labour Relations Board asked for Flagstaff strike vote

Edmonton (8 Feb. 2007) - The Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA/NUPGE) has reached a three-year tentative contract with the Wainwright and District Ambulance Society.

The agreement, which runs from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2009, provides for a 5% wage increase in each of the three years. There is also an increase to the on-call rate plus other contract improvements.

"This tentative agreement was reached in just one day's bargaining in an atmosphere of respect. It's a shame the same cannot be said for Flagstaff County," says HSAA president Elisabeth Ballermann.

"The Municipal District of Wainwright and the County of Flagstaff share a common border, yet their administrations are miles apart in their willingness to treat their ambulance employees with dignity and respect," Ballermann added.

HSAA has applied to the Alberta Labour Relations Board for a strike vote by its Flagstaff members, who are trying to negotiate a first contract.

"A strike is a very last resort," Ballermann says. "What we want are meaningful negotiations so that we can reach a fair deal for Flagstaff ambulance employees."

HSAA is a union that represents more than 14,000 professional, technical, support and ambulance workers in Alberta*s health care system. NUPGE
