Public forum to examine dangers of B.C.-Alberta trade pact

BCGEU and Council of Canadians hosting Jan. 17 gathering in Vancouver

Vancouver (9 Jan. 2007) - The B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) and the the Council of Canadians is hosting a joint public forum next week to draw attention to a radical B.C.-Alberta trade deal that undermines the authority of elected legislature members and governments.

The deal was negotiated and signed behind closed doors last April 28 by two of the most right-wing, big-business governments in Canada, the B.C. Liberal administration of Premier Gordon Campbell and the Alberta Conservative regime of former premier Ralph Klein.

"The Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA) will increase privatization, allow private investors to challenge public programs, policies and regulations, and restrict governments’ ability to act in the public interest," the BCGEU says in a website noticed announcing details of the forum.

The forum will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 7:30 p.m., at the Maritime Labour Centre, 1880 Triumph (at Victoria) in Vancouver, B.C. The featured speaker is Ellen Gould.

BCGEU members are encouraged to attend. The forum is also open to anyone with an interest in the ramifications of this unprecedented and anti-democratic domestic trade deal. NUPGE
