A Just Transition looks at the transition to a low-carbon economy
Ottawa (9 Nov. 2007) - The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) has launched a series of Climate Change IQs. These short documents supplement NUPGE's popular climate change primer, Keeping Our Cool, released in the fall of 2006.
Already in circulation are Greener Transportation: Part 1 - Biofuels: The good and bad; Greener Transportation: Part 2 - Personal Transportation and Fuel Efficient Vehicles and The Carbon Market: Part 1 - Carbon Offsets.
The latest release, A Just Transition: Cutting Carbon Emissions and Keeing Our Jobs, describes the economic shifts to be expected in our transition to a low-carbon economy. It touches on the concept of green jobs and highlights the key ingredients of a just transition strategy.
The implementation of such a strategy will transition workers from wasteful and polluting energy and manufacturing sectors to “greener” jobs in the emerging renewable
energy sector and others. This latest Climate Change IQ will be of particular interest to labour activists who are looking to the future security of jobs across Canada.
Workers are hungry for details and ready to take action. The National Union hopes that these documents will be a valuable tool for activists. To order copies e-mail national@nupge.ca or get your paper-free version on-line. NUPGE
