Ron James headlines Winnipeg fundraiser scheduled on May 1
Winnipeg (12 April 2007) - Homelessness is no laughing matter but the Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU/NUPGE) believes humour can be used effectively to help those in crisis.
The union has become an enthusiastic supporter of Comic Relief - Helping the Homeless, a Winnipeg event scheduled at 8 p.m. on May 1 to raise money for the city's Main Street Project (MSP).
The headliner for the occasion will be Ron James, one of Canada's best-known comedians. James will perform at the Burton Cummings Theatre in an event that also features CITY-TV Breakfast Television hosts John Ljungberg and Jimmy Mac.
"It's going to be a fantastic night, and we're thrilled to have this opportunity to raise some much needed funds," says Collin Sundell, an organizer and crisis worker with MSP.
MSP provides basic food, shelter and support services to vulnerable inner-city residents. Many of the people they help struggle with alcoholism, chemical dependencies and mental health issues. Whether injured, abused, lost or homeless, those in need know that MSP stands ready to provide support and services during periods of crisis.
Tickets, just $25, are available through Ticketmaster, or by contacting Collin Sundell at (204) 792-6683.
"The MGEU is pleased to support this worthwhile event and would like to recognize all of the MGEU members at MSP for their important work in the community," the union notes on its web site. NUPGE
