'If there is anything Ontario families prize, it is to spend time together.'
Toronto (12 Oct. 2007) - Dalton McGuinty's first act Thursday as a re-elected premier was to follow through on a promise to establish the third Monday of February as a new Family Day holiday in Ontario. The change comes into effect in February 2008.
Ontario will now have nine long weekends per year, putting it on par with Saskatchewan, B.C., Alberta and the Territories. McGuinty promised the new holiday when he began his campaign for re-election. Voters gave him a second majority mandate on Wednesday.
McGuinty said families are important and the new holiday is a gesture that reflects the values of his government.
"Today I can think of no better way for the government to get to work than to give families a little more of what they value above all else – time together," McGuinty said. "If there is anything Ontario families prize, it is to spend time together."
