HSAA fighting to win first contract for low-paid Alberta employees
Edmonton (15 April 2007) - The Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA/NUPGE) and the County of Flagstaff have agreed to a request to delay the release of a non-binding recommendation to settle a dispute involving ambulance employees.
This means that a proposed settlement from Andrew Sims, head of a Disputes Inquiry Board (DIB), will not be issued until April 30. Sims, a well-known arbitrator, was ordered by the government to make a non-binding recommendation for a settlement.
The government intervened after ambulance workers, represented by HSAA, had served strike notice against the county. For the past year, HSAA has been attempting to negotiate a first contract for ambulance staff in Flagstaff County. They are among the lowest paid ambulance workers in the province.
“We are prepared to fully cooperate in the process and hope that the DIB will recommend a fair settlement that will be acceptable to both parties,” says HSAA president Elisabeth Ballermann.
HSAA is a union that represents more than 14,000 professional, technical, support and ambulance workers in Alberta's health care system. NUPGE
