CAS staff in Ontario's York region could strike August 27

Wages and workload among unresolved issues

Newmarket (17 August 2007) - Staff at the York Region Children’s Aid Society could be on strike as early as August 27.

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE), which represents 180 unionized staff members, says talks broke down when the two sides were nearing an agreement. The union was unable to accept employer demands on wages, workload and mileage.

“The workload issue is of great concern to our members who want to be able to respond to the urgent needs of children and families without placing anyone in jeopardy,” says Lisa Maynard, president of OPSEU Local 304.

OPSEU members are determined to secure a collective agreement that will address the serious problems with working conditions at the agency. The employees have been working without a contract since March 31, 2007. The employer declined to meet in mediation in August. No bargaining dates are scheduled. NUPGE
