NDP picks Marlene Rivier as candidate in Ottawa West-Nepean

Well-know community and labour activist taking on Treasury Board President John Baird

Ottawa (18 March 2007) - Marlene Rivier, a long-time community activist and member of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE), will run for the New Democratic Party in the riding of Ottawa West-Nepean when the next election is held.

It will be the third time Rivier has stood for the party in the riding, now held by Conservative Treasury Board President John Baird. There had been speculation that Green Party leader Elizabeth May might also be nominated by her party to contest the riding. It now appears that May could run against Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay in his central Nova Scotia riding.

Rivier is a health care professional, the president of her OPSEU local, and a member of the executive of the Ottawa and District Labour Council. She has lived in the constituency all her life. She was unopposed for the nomination. NUPGE
