HSABC delegates choosing successor to Cindy Stewart

Well-known B.C. labour leader stepping down after 14 years

Vancouver (20 April 2007) - The Health Sciences Association of BC (HSABC/NUPGE) opens its 36th annual convention today at the Fairmont Vancouver Hotel in Vancouver.

The main item of business on the agenda will be the election of a new president to replace Cindy Stewart, one of the best known voices of the labour movement in British Columbia.

Stewart is stepping down after 14 years as president of the 13,000-member health care and social service union. Eight candidates are in the running to replace her. Stewart will deliver her final address to the convention on Friday.

James Clancy, president of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE), will address delegates on Saturday. Jim Sinclair, president of the B.C. Federation of Labour, will also give a presentation.

The theme of this year's convention is Proud of our Past; Ready for the Future.

One of the convention highlights will be a presentation by Vancity Credit Union CEO Dave Mowat, one of 19 Canadians accredited to present Al Gore’s ‘Inconvenient Truth’ message on the environment. HSABC is the only union audience that will receive the presentation. NUPGE
