Shutdown occurs as seniors are stranded on waiting lists
St. John's (21 August 2007) - A decision by the Eastern Health and Community Services Board to temporarily close a unit at the Hoyles-Escasoni Seniors Complex in St. John’s stems from an inability to recruit and retain staff, says the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE/NUPGE).
The closure has been attributed to staff shortages.
“The staffing shortage at the Hoyles-Escasoni Complex is indicative of the crisis in staffing throughout the health care system," says NAPE president Carol Furlong. "Ironically, while the unit is closed, there are waiting lists of seniors who are trying to access long-term care facilities.”
Furlong said health care boards must take immediate action to address recruitment and retention problems.
“The shortage of staff is having an impact on everyone concerned, from those who need the services to the staff who cannot continue to work with reduced numbers. To address the problem, health authorities need to start offering permanent, full-time jobs with nationally competitive wages and benefits,” she said. NUPGE
