Agreements affect more than 1,700 workers at campuses in Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw and Prince Albert
Regina (22 Feb. 2007) - The Saskatchewan Government and General Employees' Union (SGEU/NUPGE) has negotiated tentative agreements for more than 1,700 employees at four campuses of the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST).
The agreements, affecting members of the SGEU's academic and professional services bargaining units in Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw and Prince Albert, were hammered out after seven days and nights of negotiations with the aid of a mediator. Details are being withheld until members are notified.
The academic unit has approximately 1,200 members while there are about 560 members in the professional services unit.
Jim Steele, one of the chief negotiators, said the agreements are being recommended to members for acceptance. "There were a lot of concessions on the table and now they are gone and we've got a deal,'' he said. The primary was to achieve competitive wages and benefits, he added.
"The union’s first priority is to ensure the members are informed, before details are discussed in the media," the union says in a statement on its web site. Employees are expected to vote on the tentative settlements during the week of March 19. NUPGE
