NUPGE delegates hear powerful message on climate change

Peter Corbyn urges NUPGE Components and members to take action

Fredericton (23 June 2007) - Delegates at the policy convention of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) turned their focus Saturday to the global issue of climate change.

Peter Corbyn, a spokesperson for Al Gore and his Academy Award winning documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, kicked off the morning session with a short powerful video and a moving slide presentation.

Corbyn has carried this message to more than 10,000 people and speaks not only as a climate change activist and energy efficiency expert, but also as a member of the New Brunswick Union (NBU/NUPGE). His message brought the impact of climate change home.

He praised NUPGE’s production of a Climate Change Primer, and urged the National Union and its Components to continue to take action.

James Clancy, national NUPGE president, spoke of the union's initiative to bring clear and concise information on global warming to members through additional Climate Change IQ supplement documents that will be available on the National Union’s website.

He outlined the union’s three-point strategy to promote change:

  • Work with Component unions and with NGOs committed to climate solutions and National GHG (greenhouse gas) reductions.
  • Make government accountable to Canada’s Kyoto commitments.
  • Ensure a just transition for those workers and communities that are caught in the squeeze of moving to a low carbon economy.

Members showed overwhelming resolve to act from coast to coast.

Discussion and contributions from the floor resolved to continue the National Union's efforts to educated and to work with coalition partners to galvanize public and political opinion in favour of significant greenhouse gas reductions.

The convention reaffirmed its commitment to work to devise a just transition strategy.
