MGEU supporting run for victims of HIV/AIDS in Africa

June 9 event aims to attract as many participants as possible

Winnipeg (24 May 2007) - The Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU/NUPGE) will be a “participating organization” in the 2007 Run for Rights, a June 9 fitness event in support of rights for people affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa.

MGEU is helping to organize the event and to raise funds by encouraging its members and the public at large to run, walk, cycle, or rollerblade a 5km or 10km route, stretching along Scotia Street from Kildonan Park to St. John’s Park in Winnipeg. The event begins at 9:30 a.m. - with registration from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

Participants are being asked to collect pledges on behalf of the MGEU. All funds raised will be donated to the Tšepong HIV/AIDS Clinic in Lesotho (Masai for Africa Campaign).

The Masai for Africa Campaign is one of four projects that the National Union has developed partnerships with and encouraged members and components to support. These initiatives were announced at the National Union's 2006 Building International Sisterhood Conference.

Those unable to run in the event can still get involved by becoming race day volunteers. For more information on how to participate, call 1-866-982-MGEU (6438) or e-mail the MGEU Resource Centre.
