York Region Children's Aid Society staff members strike

Wages and workload key unresolved issues

Newmarket (28 Aug. 2007) - Picket lines went up at six locations in York Region Monday after employees of the York Children’s Aid Society rejected a final contract offer. Wages and an unmanageable workload are the main unresolved issues.

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE), which represents 180 unionized staff members, was nearing an agreement when talks broke down.

Lisa Maynard, president of OPSEU local 304, says the staff members work hard for kids and families but "under the current conditions, they can't do it successfully."

"We are understaffed. We have lost 50 people in the last two years," adds Erin Kinsley, local vice-president. "They have left to find other child welfare employment. This creates a huge workload burden for the staff remaining."

OPSEU members are determined to secure a collective agreement that will address the serious problems with working conditions at the agency. Their last contract expired March 31. NUPGE
