Deal retains workers, improves job security and saves public money by reducing contracting out
Vancouver (31 May 2007) - B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) members employed with the B.C. Pavilion Corp., the government agency responsible for B.C. Place Stadium, have ratified a new collective agreement.
The agreement addresses a number of issues including:
- the ability for members to access additional work
- improved benefits for part-time and event-time employees
- market adjustments for 4th Class Engineers.
"We offered to play a proactive role in working with the employer to attract and retain workers - an increasing concern as the Olympic Games draw near," says George Heyman, BCGEU president.
The new collective agreement includes union proposals to help address event staffing shortages, leading up to the Olympics. The stadium will be the primary venue for the 2010 Olympics.
"We are also pleased that the new agreement reduces the employer's reliance on contracting out," Heyman says. "We believe our proposals to build a stable workforce will save taxpayers' money and improve service and security for B.C. Place events, including the Olympics."
Under the new four year collective agreement, workers will receive annual wage increases of 3%, 2.5%, 2% and 2%. Workers are also eligible for the signing bonus offered to public sector employees.
The new agreement runs until May 31, 2011. The 250 employees affected are security staff. NUPGE
