OPSEU observing Injured Workers' Day on June 1

25 years since 3,000 workers gathered at the Ontario legislature

Toronto (7 May 2008) - Sunday June 1 will mark the 25th anniversary of the Injured Workers' Day, the event that began in 1983 when more than 3,000 workers gathered at the Ontario Legislature to participate in public hearings on workers' compensation and to highlight the principle that injury should not mean poverty.

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE) is urging its members to participate in local events organized by labour councils to observe the occasion.

In Toronto, those wishing to participate are invited to join injured workers and their supporters and families when they gather at 11 a.m. at the legislature. The plan is to again deliver the original message to the minister of labour – that having a disability should not equal poverty – and to celebrate their work as a community within the labour movement.
