Sheriffs eligible for Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal

'Sheriffs and correctional officers put their lives on the line each day.' - BCGEU

Ottawa (8 Oct. 2008) - Governor General Michaëlle Jean has announced that B.C. sheriffs will now be included in the Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal program. The honour recognizes people who work in high-risk jobs and dedicate themselves to public safety.

The medal was created in 2004 and is awarded to recipients who have completed 20 years of exemplary service, including at least 10 years involving risk. To be eligible, peace officers must have been employed on or after September 1998.

"I am very pleased with this announcement," says Dean Purdy of the British Columbia Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE).

"We have been pushing for this recognition for some time, including having this as an agenda item in meetings with the attorney general, and a resolution passed at the BCGEU's 2006 Policy Convention calling for the inclusion of sheriffs in the medal program. Sheriffs and correctional officers put their lives on the line each day they go to work and it's only right that they be recognized for that," he says. NUPGE
