72.8% say support fired biologist Luc Pomerleau
Ottawa (10 Oct. 2008) - A national survey commissioned by the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) has found that the vast majority of Canadians believe a scientist at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) did the right thing when he shared confidential information detailing plans to hand key food safety programs over to industry for self-policing.
Conducted by Nanos Research the poll found that 72.8% of those surveyed supported the scientist, Luc Pomerleau, who referred the document to his union. A previous Nanos survey revealed a high level of trust in the government inspectors and scientists whose job it is to ensure the safety of food (64%). By contrast, only 25% trusted industry to police itself.
"Canadians trust government scientists like Luc Pomerleau and they expect them to do everything within their power to protect their health and safety," says institute president Michele Demers. "Instead of muzzling and intimidating these scientists, the federal government should be ensuring they have the tools and resources required to keep Canadians safe."
Luc Pomerleau was fired as a CFIA biologist after the document was leaked.
