Saskatchewan's government fires top labour board officials

New chair described as 'complimentary' to government's right-wing agenda

Regina (12 March 2008) - The firing of the chair and two vice-chairs of the Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board (SLRB) has provoked an uproar during the first legislative session of Premier Brad Wall's new anti-labour government.

A noisy debate took place in the house this week after the dismissals were announced without cause last week. Regina lawyer Ken Love, a supporter of Wall and his new Saskatchewan Party administration, was named the new chair of the board.

The firings followed the introduction of two anti-labour laws at the opening of the session. The dismissals, and the appointment of Love, were described by the government as "complimentary" to its pro-business agenda.

Former premier Lorne Calvert accused the government of political interference. The only reason given for the firings was that the previous office holders were "legacy appointments" of the former NDP government.

Calvert said the previous appointees were experienced and well qualified, and that their firings were unjust. "I would argue it's more about politics," Calvert said.
