Developmental Services Sector Worker Appreciation Day

NUPGE planning national appreciation day later in the year

Toronto (16 Jan. 2008) - The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE) is celebrating today (Jan. 16) as Developmental Services Sector Worker Appreciation Day for 2008.

The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) is planning a similar national day this fall to extend appreciation to employees in the sector across the country.

The day is observed to recognize the dedication and support these workers provide in the field of developmental services and to raise community awareness of the issues they face on the job. It is the second annual appreciation day held for the sector in Ontario.

“This day is set aside to let you know that your work matters to the people you support, to their families and to your community as a whole. The difference you make in people’s lives is immeasurable,” says Warren (Smokey) Thomas, OPSEU president.

In OPSEU, 2007 marked a major watershed. Workers in seven Ontario agencies were forced to go on strike to improve working conditions and to make substantial long-term gains in the living conditions of the people they support.

As a result of this work the employees accomplished a huge victory, convincing the government to increase funding to the sector by $200 million and winning significant wage increases for members and others working in the field.

“Our members are dedicated to the people we support through our work,” says Thomas. “The appreciation extends to all workers in the developmental service sector supporting children and adults and their families in communities across the province.” NUPGE
