More than 30 officers invoke safety provisions in Occupational Health and Safety Act
Toronto (17 Jan. 2008) - The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE) is urging the ministry of correctional services and the police hate crimes unit to move swiftly to catch those responsible for threatening, racist hate mail sent to black correctional officers at the Don Jail.
More than 30 officers refused Wednesday to report for duty, invoking workplace protections contained in the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The ministry of labour is investigating.
“Harassment and racism in any form will not be tolerated by this union,” says OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas. “We will assist in any way possible to ensure that those who perpetrate this type of criminal behaviour are identified and dealt with by the proper authorities.”
OPSEU has a staff and legal team working with its members on this issue. The union will continue to work with the Ministry to ensure these members are protected and this situation is resolved as soon as possible. NUPGE
