One third of all NBUPPE members eligible for pensions within five years
Fredericton (17 Oct. 2008) - The New Brunswick Union of Public and Private Employees (NBUPPE/NUPGE) will hold a "Pension Tension" rally Saturday when hundreds of public employees will march on the provincial legislature to express concerns about pension issues.
Approximately one third of the union's 8,000 members will become eligible for pensions in the next five years. Over the past year, more than 2,000 members responded to an on-line survey on pension issues and the need for improvements.
The rally is part of an on-going lobby campaign to draw attention to the importance of the issue for NBUPPE members and for workplaces in general.
The event is expected to attract members from a number of unions. Demonstrators gather at the Delta at noon and march along a river trail to the legislature building for a general rally and speeches. The NBUPPE members will return to the Delta at 2 p.m. to resume convention business.
The rally will coincide with the NBUPPE biennial convention which opens Friday and ends Sunday at the Delta Hotel.
Larry Brown, national secretary-treasurer of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE), will speak to delegates during the convention. He will talk about the current economic situation in Canada and the need for governments to play a constructive role in protecting jobs, incomes and retirement savings.
Brown will also pay tribute to retiring president Debbie Lacelle, emphasizing the major role she has played in the development of NBUPPE and the significant contribution she has made as a member of the NUPGE National Executive Board and the NUPGE Pension Committee.
More than 400 delegates will deal with policy resolutions, financial reports and issues facing public employees across the province. Download - Biennial Book NUPGE
