MGEU serves notice to bargain at 10 child care centres

Groundbreaking step on behalf of 160 workers in the St. Boniface area of Winnipeg

Winnipeg (23 April 2008) - The Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU/NUPGE) has served notice to bargain on behalf of employees at 10 child care centres in the St. Boniface area of Winnipeg.

"The union is pleased to be taking this groundbreaking step in bargaining a first collective agreement for approximately 160 early childhood educators in St. Boniface," MGEU says in a notice posted on its website.

The centres are: Le P’tit Bonheur, General Vanier Children’s Centre, Happiness Is, Lovin-'N'-Learnin Day Care, Little People's Place, Panda Bear Day Care Co-op, Rainbow Day Nursery (Phases 1, 2, 3, and 3-B), St. Boniface Children’s Place d’enfants, Saint Boniface Garderie des Bambin and Little Bo Peep Early Learning Centre.

The Manitoba Child Care Association (MCCA) supports the move toward unionization. Manitoba parents often face long waiting lists for spots at licensed child care centres, some up to three years. Low wages, a shortage of workers and high turnover are common. NUPGE
