University of BC child care workers vote to join BCGEU

Workers at five new child care centres at University of B.C. have voted to join the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union to make their work place better.

Vancouver (5 Aug 2009) - Workers at five new child care centres at University of B.C. (UBC) have voted to join the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) to make their work place better.

The 36 new union members voted unanimously in favour of joining the BCGEU in a vote on July 31.

They will be rolled into the existing collective agreement at UBC, where the BCGEU already represents about 170 staff at established campus child care centres.

"I am happy to welcome more UBC child care staff to our union," stated BCGEU president Darryl Walker. "The new members have joined because they have seen the positive employer-union relationships the BCGEU maintains."

The new centres offer 108 spaces for infants to toddlers. Four of these centres are part of a unique pilot project that brings together children of different age groups in the first licensed multi-age centres in the Lower Mainland.

The BCGEU represents 3,000 early childhood educators and family child care providers in the province of B.C. One of the aims of the union is to establish a universal public child care system with the help of the Coalition of Child Care Advocates.
