Canadian shelters unite to end violence against women

Action-based initiative, called Uniting to End Violence Against Women, will connect shelters that help abused women across the country.

Ottawa (7 Dec. 2009) - Provincial, Aboriginal and territorial representatives from sheltering organizations recently met in Ottawa and created the first-ever national network of women’s shelters.

The action-based initiative: Uniting to End Violence Against Women – Establishing a National Network of Women’s Shelters, will connect shelters that help abused women across the country: giving them a stronger medium to share resources and a bigger microphone with which to create awareness.

“We’re getting to work immediately.” said Jan Reimer, Provincial Coordinator of the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters, “The provincial associations will be asking shelters what their top challenges and triumphs are, and how the network can better help them provide this essential service to their communities.”

The Honourable Helena Guergis, Minister of State (Status of Women) announced that the federal government will be contributing $1 million to support the establishment of the long-anticipated national network of women’s sheltering organizations.

“We’re excited to receive this funding for the network from Status of Women,” said Jan Reimer.  “The support will make a difference to shelters and will help women escaping violence.”
