Cancer Agency workers ratify new collective agreement

“Going forward, the SCA needs to clarify its vision for its employees and adopt a third-party mediation/arbitration process to ensure that the next round of bargaining is more effective.” - SGEU President Bob Bymoen.

Regina (29 Oct. 2012) - The Saskatchewan Cancer Agency (SCA) workers represented by the Saskatchewan Government and General Employees’ Union (SGEU/NUPGE) have ratified a new collective agreement.

Just over 300 of the 500 SGEU/NUPGE members voted in total. Of them, around 60 per cent were in favour of ratifying the new collective agreement, after almost three years of bargaining.

“There are members who feel this agreement did not treat them equally, which is reflected by this low vote,” said SGEU President, Bob Bymoen.

“Going forward, the SCA needs to clarify its vision for its employees and adopt a third-party mediation/arbitration process to ensure that the next round of bargaining is more effective,” added Bymoen.

”Although we are pleased to be at the end of this difficult round of bargaining, with only 60 per cent of the membership voting to ratify this agreement, it is apparent that there are bridges that need mending,” said Kevin Lobzun, co-chair of the SGEU/NUPGE Negotiating Committee.

“It is my hope that both the Union and the Employer will make this their top priority as we head back to the table again in just a little over a year,” added Lobzun.

The provisions of the new collective agreement will take effect thirty days from the date of ratification. The terms of the new collective agreement are from January 1, 2010 to March 31, 2014.

Some of the highly-skilled and trained workers at the SCA include:

  • Clinical Research Associates, Dosimetrists, Mammography Techs, Medical Radiation Therapists, Pharmacists, Pharmacy Techs, Registered Nurses, Support Staff, and System Analysts.
