Help OPSEU campus safety workers get back to work

Contact Carleton University's President to tell her to negotiate a fair deal that includes addressing the campus safety staffing and retention levels on campus. Call her at 613 520-3801 or send an email to roseann.runte@carleton.ca.

Ottawa (21 Mar. 2014) — Members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE) who work for Carleton University as campus safety staff have been on strike since March 10 as they fight for improved safety for students, staff, faculty and visitors.

Carleton has been using ill-equipped security guards to replace safety workers

Since the beginning of the strike, the University has replaced the experienced safety staff and special constables with security guards. Security guards lack the specific training necessary on campus to provide community assistance. OPSEU/NUPGE says, "That’s an inadequate and dangerous substitute." Carleton's campus safety workers have received training from the Ottawa police to be able to respond for any type of incident in the campus community.

"It’s time to get back to the bargaining table and negotiate a fair agreement–one that recognizes the need to hire and retain enough experienced staff to keep everyone safe on the growing campus," says the union.

The OPSEU/NUPGE members on strike include constables, dispatchers, campus safety officers and student safety patrollers.

Striking workers need your help: contact Carleton University's President Dr. Runte

In order to help get the workers back to work, pressure needs to be put on the University to return to the bargaining table to negotiate a fair and reasonable contract.

Please contact Carleton University President, Dr. Roseann O’Reilly Runte.

Tell her you expect her to make sure the university signs a fair agreement with its safety staff of fifty members. Tell her you expect her to provide safety for everyone on the Carleton campus.

Call President Runte at 613-520-3801 or send her an email at roseann.runte@carleton.ca.
